The princess cut is the most important new cut or shape for diamonds. It is a great improvement over the previous step cut used for square and oblong diamonds. It is effectively a square version of the round brilliant cut, and is known technically as a square modified brilliant cut.
Most rough stones are best cut into princess cuts rather than step-cut square baguettes of square emerald cuts. This is particularly so because rough stone is quite deep and the princess cut works best with deep stones. This allows the maximum weight retention, and lowers the final cost per carat. Because of the extra faceting, and the effects it produces, princess cuts are naturally more brilliant and sparkly than ordinary square diamonds. |
